Mediterranean and Middle Eastern Network

13 March 2009

I’m helping set up a research group on the Middle East and Mediterranean for researchers and graduate students at Cambridge.

Would you like to participate or are you interested in helping to organise this group?

Those of us who work on the Mediterranean and the Middle East find ourselves scattered amongst different faculties and departments. We want to set up this research group so that we have a common forum where we can discuss research in a more coherent context and meet people working in related areas. The planned format will be fortnightly seminars each term and a couple of workshops aimed at graduate students each year.

We will be applying for funding to establish this research group at the end of April, so we’re looking for people who would like to help with organisation and planning. We’d also like to hear from you if you think you might be interested in joining the group once it’s set up.

Please also send us any ideas you have for possible speakers (from the UK). The planned theme for the first year will be ‘The Text and Beyond’. We want to challenge the philological approach to the study of the Middle East and the Mediterranean and move beyond this narrow emphasis on the authentic text to consider the broader concept of literary space.
